An ancient land, alive and full of identity
Carvalhal is a parish marked by its size, history and cultural richness. Located in the municipality of Bombarral, in the Oeste region, it is the largest parish in the municipality and a territory where landscape, memory and community life meet in a unique way.
Where We Are
Located in the Centro region, Oeste sub-region, district of Leiria, Carvalhal covers 32.34 km² and is home to around 2,393 inhabitants (2021 Census). Its geographic position, close to places such as Bom Jesus and Barro do Lobo, places the parish at a natural crossing point between the interior and the coast, between its rural past and the new challenges of local development.
A History Older Than the Country Itself
Carvalhal is often described as one of the oldest settlements in Portugal, with traces of human occupation long predating the founding of the country. Over the centuries it was shaped by different peoples, beliefs and activities, leaving a deep mark on its cultural and heritage identity.
Among its main historical landmarks are:
- The Tower of Carvalhal, also known as the Torre dos Lafetá, the oldest building in the municipality. Mentioned in a will of King Sancho II (1223–1248) in the 13th century, it was later granted by King Dinis (1279–1325) to an Aragonese nobleman, becoming a lasting symbol of local history.
- The Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Socorro (Chapel of Our Lady of Succour), built in 1547, a remarkable example of religious heritage, with interiors covered in tiles and a rare 16th-century image of the Nursing Virgin.
- The Santuário do Senhor Jesus do Carvalhal (Sanctuary of the Lord Jesus of Carvalhal), for centuries an important centre of pilgrimage, religious festivals and processions, where faith, tradition and popular culture meet.
- The old Albergaria dos Peregrinos (Pilgrims’ Hostel), also known as the Hospital do Carvalhal, built in the 17th century to shelter travellers and pilgrims crossing the region, bearing witness to the parish’s role as a place of passage and hospitality.

More than its monuments, Carvalhal is made up of its traditions, festivals, popular knowledge and community life, passed down from generation to generation. Over time, these practices have helped build a strong identity that remains alive in the daily life of its people.
Today, Carvalhal looks to the future without forgetting its roots. Valuing heritage, preserving collective memory and promoting sustainable development are challenges that go hand in hand with the wish to keep the parish active, inhabited and culturally alive.

Centuries of history, lived in the present
Before Portugal
Very ancient human occupation
Long before the founding of Portugal, this region was already inhabited. Over the centuries, different peoples passed through, leaving their mark on the landscape, customs and collective memory of Carvalhal.
13th century
The Tower of Carvalhal
Carvalhal’s medieval tower is first mentioned in a will of King Sancho II (1223–1248), and was later granted by King Dinis (1279–1325) to an Aragonese nobleman. Today known as the Torre dos Lafetá, it is the oldest building in the municipality of Bombarral and one of the parish’s great symbols.
16th century (1547)
Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Socorro
The Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Socorro is built, a remarkable example of local religious heritage. Its interior, richly decorated with tiles, holds a 16th-century image of the Nursing Virgin of great historical and artistic value.
16th century
Chapel of the Santíssimo Sacramento
Founded on the initiative of Queen Leonor (1458–1525), this chapel reinforces the religious and cultural importance of Carvalhal during the Manueline and post-Manueline periods.
17th–18th centuries
Pilgrimage and Hospitality
Carvalhal establishes itself as a place of passage and welcome, with the construction of the Albergaria dos Peregrinos (or Hospital do Carvalhal), built to support travellers and pilgrims crossing the region.
17th century onward
Processions, Festivals and Popular Traditions
The Santuário do Senhor Jesus do Carvalhal becomes, from time immemorial, an important centre of pilgrimage. Religious festivals, fairs and processions have long brought — and still bring — people from across the region, preserving popular traditions such as the singing of loas and traditional music.
19th–20th centuries
Community, Territory and Change
Carvalhal undergoes profound social and economic change, while always keeping a strong rural, cultural and community identity, expressed through its traditions, festivals and associative life.
Antonieta Moura
Guardian of Carvalhal’s memory
Born in Carvalhal in 1920, Antonieta Gonçalves Leal de Moura dedicated her life to collecting and preserving the village’s traditions, customs and beliefs. She founded the Biblioteca António Moura and the Associação de Defesa do Carvalhal, and authored the Cadernos de Etnografia and the Cadernos Históricos do Bombarral, and is recognised as one of the foremost guardians of Carvalhal’s memory.
1988
Founding of the Carvalhal Development Association (ADC)
ADC is founded with the aim of valuing the parish’s historical and cultural identity and promoting its local development.
2024
Reactivation of ADC by the community
On the initiative of residents, the Association is reactivated at a General Assembly, resuming its mission to preserve memory, boost local culture, and shape the future of Carvalhal in a sustainable and participatory way.
Today
A living past, a future under construction
Carvalhal remains a land of history, people and identity. Collective memory, heritage and community involvement are today the foundation for building a future with roots.
