Carvalhal is more than a place — it is a living history, made up of people, traditions and memories that deserve to be preserved and carried into the future.

It is in this spirit that the Carvalhal Development Association (ADC) was born, and reborn.

Founded in 1988 and reactivated in 2024 on the initiative of the local community, ADC’s mission is to value the historical and cultural identity of the parish of Carvalhal (Bombarral), promoting sustainable, participatory development with a sense of the future.

What We Do

We believe that local development begins with people and with valuing what is ours. That is why ADC works to:

• Preserve and promote the historical and cultural heritage of Carvalhal
• Revive local traditions, actively involving the population
• Promote cultural tourism as a driver of sustainable development
• Enhance the cultural and touristic values of the region
• Organise cultural, recreational and social activities, such as festivals, study visits and information sessions
• Help identify and resolve local problems, contributing to a more active and cohesive community
• Promote exchange with other associations and institutions, locally and regionally

ADC is a place of encounter, sharing and action. A meeting point between generations, knowledge and aspirations, where Carvalhal’s identity is respected, cared for and carried sustainably into the future. Whether through culture, memory, tourism or civic participation, we work every day so that Carvalhal remains a living place — proud of its past and confident in its future.

A Tribute to Carvalhal’s Memory

Throughout its history, Carvalhal was shaped by people who dedicated their lives to preserving its identity. One of them was Antonieta Gonçalves Leal de Moura (b. 1920), a key figure in defending the village’s memory and traditions.

She studied in Lisbon and worked in tourism and journalism, but it was on returning to Carvalhal in the 1980s that she devoted herself entirely to gathering local traditions, customs and beliefs. She founded the Biblioteca António Moura and the Associação de Defesa do Carvalhal, and authored the Cadernos de Etnografia and the Cadernos Históricos do Bombarral — a legacy that continues to inspire ADC’s work.
