The Lafetá Tower

Considered the oldest building in the municipality of Bombarral, the Tower first appears in the will of King Sancho II (reigned 1223–1247/48). In 1243 the king gave it — calling it his “square house” — to the nobleman Pedro Franco, of Vila Verde dos Francos.

When Pedro Franco died without heirs, the Tower returned to the Crown, until King Dinis (1279–1325) granted it to the Aragonese nobleman Álvaro Gil de Carvajal, who had accompanied Queen Isabel to Portugal.

The presence of the Lafetá family at the Carvalhal Tower is documented in the income and expenditure accounts of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament of Carvalhal.
