Quinta dos Loridos

Route A — Carvalhal · Stop 3 of 3

The Affaitati entailed estate

In the 14th century the Monastery of Alcobaça became lord of a vast territory, whose core went back to a grant made in 1153 by King Afonso Henriques (1143–1185). The Carvalhal area, in Estremadura, concentrated many of the Monastery’s holdings: fertile land for wheat and other cereals, fruit, olive groves and vineyards, leased to whoever could farm them.

A document of 10 October 1430 shows that this estate was granted to João Annes Lourido, from whom its name presumably derives.

The property later passed to Giovan Francesco Affaitati and became the main asset of his entailed estate (morgadio); one document calls it both “quinta dobedos” (the Óbidos estate) and “a dos louridos”, probably after its former owner. The Quinta remained in the Lafetá family until the mid-17th century, through the descendants of Inês de Lafetá, daughter of Giovan Francesco Affaitati. Today it is part of the Buddha Eden garden.
